Some munincipalitys are requiring a trap outside of homes. Is it really necessary or is it another place to stop up?

For 75 years we had traps in our main sewer line then they stopped using them, they are good because they stop sewer gas from getting into your line, if you have troyble with sewer gas then put one in, I got a septic tank an dput one on it because of sewer gas.
