I’m installing a basement toilet over 1/4″ ceramic tile, mortor and concrete foundation. How high should the roughed-in 4″ PVC pipe stick out above the top of the tile? Should the metal flange sit directly on top of the tile or should the top of the flange be flush with the top of the tile? HELP! [email protected]

the lower surface of the plange must rest on the finished floor (i.e. the flange top surface is above the floor). Not recessed to floor or below floor. (IRC 2705.1 and UPC 316.3.1).

You talk about metal flange, if you are using PVC then you use Pvc flange, a 3″ flange will fit into 4″ pipe and if you use it keep 4″ pipe about 1/4″ below finished floor.

why not just stub the pvc up above floor level and just cut it flush after floor is finnished?no measuring, no thinking required.

You still have to use collar, if you use 4″ you have to cut coc. around pipe to receive it and if you use 3″ flange some are flush others got little bevel on bottom which holes flange about 1/4″ above floor.

You can certainly do this., but you will need a special tool, i.e. the Rigid internal plastic/copper soil pipe cutter…cost about $100 US… So, unless you do a lot of this work and already have this gadget, why not cut the stub to the right length?
