I want to run 3″ PVC DWV to the main sewer stack which is ABS. I know you can’t mix ABS & PVC. How do you make the transition from PVC to ABS? Is it simply by using a multi-purpose glue for the new joint at the stack or by using a Fernco type connector?

Multi purpose “glue” is to glue either PVC or ABS but not PVC to ABS. You need to use a banded coupling, fernco or Male to Female adaptors.

Glue a 3″ pvc male adapter on the pvc, and glue a 3″ abs male adapter on the abs.
Then connect them with a 3″ no-hub stainless steel band.
            Good Luck
