What affect will approximately 3 to 5 cigarette butts per day being flushed down the toilet have on the septic tank?

Ernest, the filters of cigarettes are very slow to decompose, and will pass through a conventionally baffled septic tank. The filters will slowly accumulate in the distribution pipes of the leach field, and eventually clog the small holes in the pipes causing the leach field to fail.

          Solutions:
          1. Stop smoking!

          2. Stop using your septic system as an ash tray.

          3. Smoke non-filtered cigarettes.

          4. Install a septic tank effluent filter in the outlet tee of the septic tank, and have the sludge, with the filters, pumped every three or four years. Clean the filter annually.

          5. Stop smoking!
