My wife and I just bought a house and moved in 2 weeks ago. We discovered that the hot water was scalding so I checked the temperature setting on the Reliance Gas 501 Water Heater and it was set all the way up. I turned the setting down to “HOT”, which should have set the temperature to 120 degrees but the actual temp is at least 20 degrees lower, which explains why the previous owners had the temp turned up all the way.
That being said, I’m wondering if there is some kind of thermostat on the water heater that might be bad.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your post seems similar to the one posted earlier – read the post named Reliance 501 and see if it helps you.
