boiler trips out on overheat when boiler stat turns off burner, even when pump still running. Still does it when boiler stat turned down lower. Have replaced boiler stat still same problem.

Check the pump is actually working – remove the case and make it run outside of the pipe – just because you can “hear” it don’t mean it is actually pumping anything – heck the impellor may have come off the shaft so it will not be pumping anything – just spinning on the shaft.
Clear any air that has gotten into the ring system air is a sure way to stop things working and make heat exchangers go out on overheats.
