My natural gas furnace & hot water heater are side by side in a small utility room. There is a smell similar to that of car exhaust fumes which seems to come from the water heater. The furnace has been serviced, the ductwork has been cleaned, the gas company has checked for gas & carbon monoxide, with negative results. Any ideas?

i wish i could have known if the whtr has been in operation or if it has been sitting ideal i would try turn water cold valve off to incoming cold line plug off the hot side cap whith 3/4 galv. nipple attach garden hose to cold side of whtropen drain valve turn garden hose on and flush tank note if electric htr shut power off if gas shut gas valve off
