      The release valve on my water heater is leaking. I would like to shut the water off that goes into the tank, but still use what water is in it. First, can I do this, and second, will this caust any type of combustion in the tank if the tank gets empty. Thanks in advance for your help.

      ThresaM,Have your heater checked out by a professional.You can not shut the cold water off and expect to get hot water out of the tank.You could have a bad relief valve,faulty gas valve or a pressure problem.Please have the problem checked.The only way to get the water out would be to open the drain on the tank,but the drain probably is plugged up.If you get lucky and the drain isn’t plugged,make sure you turn off the gas to the tank.

      You either have to have the inlet valve open to force the water out of the tank, or you have to drain the water from the bottom of the tank after allowing air to enter the tank from the top. If you drain the tank and do not shut off the gas supply to it first, the tank will “dry fire” and be destroyed. You do not have to remove the water from the tank to replace the T&P safety valve on the top of it.

      Sylvan,don’t let him bug you.He has got his head so far up his butt that he is breathing out of his armpits. I live in Nebraska.All the jerk has to do is look at our profilest least we got one.
