I am having difficulty getting 3 and 4 inch sch 40 joints to seal completely. these are furnace vent pipes, is it necessary to use the clear cleaner and primer before the cement or can I just use the cleaner and cement?

We just use conventional cleaner then the glue with no problem but we do NOT twist the pipe once it is glues as this has been found over time to cause us considerable grief with small leaks when one dones not need them to happen well after the job was completed.

The only time you need the cleaner is when the pipe or fitting is dirty and needs cleaning.

The primer should always be used with the cement.

Years ago we just used the cleaner and cement, then we were told that was wrong according to the ASTM rating.

We tested the strength of the old way and new way. Using the primer does make a difference, try pulling the pipe and fitting apart after a short time period using both methods.
