The threads that the screw of the water faucet handle should fit into are stripped. Is there a way to turn on the water even though the handle will not fit into the faucet. I’ve tried using pliers to turn it, but it doesn’t work. Tough to not know the jargon! You plumbers are lucky!

Try vice gripps.Take out stem you might be able to get new one.
