Not sure if water softner is working

We have a culligan mark 2 automatic water conditioner. Its set to discharge every other day but we have not added any salt to it for almost a year now. We can hear it discharge. I marked the level of the salt inside the tank to see if it has gone down but it hasn’t. Also the salt is all stuck together forming a “crust” near the water level. Is there anything that we can do first before we call in a service man?

Check to be sure the softener isnt in bypass mode. Also, remove the old salt from the brine tank and put new salt in. If neither of these suggestions fix the problem then you’ll need to have someone come out to take a look at it.
