I have just moved into a new house and there is an annoying droning sound (like a fog horn in the distance) that comes from the laundry area. I can feel a slight vibration through the cold tap in the laundry basin.

Sometimes it makes the sound for no reason, other times it occurs after you turn any tap off (hot or cold). It stops whenever you turn a tap on but starts again when you turn it off. It can last for several minutes. Any ideas what this is?

It could be a loose washer on a valve are stop are your PRV . It also could be pipes expanding in wall are rubbing on joist in basement. What you have to do start from last fixture and turn it on and see if noise comes on if not turn fix. off and go to next one, it also could be a ballcock in toilet, if f;apper is leaking then ball cock starts to fill and could have bad washer and viabrate. Take some egg dye and put in toilet tank, dont flush and see if it comes into tank Let me know.

GP1. By your posting I take it that you are from Australia. If your HWS is in the Laundry or therabouts, get your plumber to check the NI50 valve, if in any other country maybe a Nefa non return/isolating valve or other brand.
      P.s Yanks have faucets.
