I’m in a trailer house in MT, where we are having a severe cold spell. Despite precautions, my hot water seems to be frozen in all faucets. Cold is okay in most faucets. The hot was okay at a trickle at first, then when I opened the faucet further to use the hot water it gurgled and choked and then stopped flowing all together. Now none of the hot faucets are working.

I can not get under the trailer to try to thaw the pipes myself and will not be able to get a plumber for several days at least. I don’t expect it to be warmer than 0 for several days. Our heat has been out for two days so I do not have heating to help warm up those pipes either. Is it best to leave the hot faucets open during this waiting time or close them up? I want to avoid a flood under and/or inside the house. I have shutoffs at the individual faucets, would it be wise to close those? Should I shut the main water line off until I can have the pipes fixed? I read somewhere that I could turn off the hot water source and I would like to know how to do that if I should.

      Thank you.

The hot water freezes first.Since you have no heat I would shut off main valve and protect it from cold and drain as much water out of system as you can, Turn off EL. to water heater and drain tank if you can open all faucets and leave them open until you turn on water. When you turn water back on do it slow because you might have broken pipes.
