Was considering replacing a 3 handle shower faucet with a new one. My question is can I use compression fittings when installing the new one, because the access area is very tight and soldering would be somewhat difficult. The supply lines are 1/2 inch copper.

You could but I would not use them in wall I would solder them. You could use a sweat union, sweat one side of union inwall and solder other side to valve pipe.
