The water from my hot water heater is getting hotter without any changes in the thermostat setting. Is this a sign that the thermostat is going or that the whole heater should be replaced?

Glen, You have to replace the thermostats. I would replace both the upper and lower while you are at it. That should solve your problem.

            Good luck,
            Scott

It’s a an A O Smith gas water heater . At least 24 years old – came with the house. Can’t see the serial number- under the insulation blanket.

If that boy is 24 yrs. old I would change it first chance I got before it goes all together and you have a mess on your hands
