The floor is wet under the tiles leading from the toilet area, but does not seem to be wet behind the toilet. What could this be? How do we proceed to fix the problem?

Take up bowl and dry floor as best as you can with hair dryer, install new wax ring and see if that fixes it if not check for other leaks, I think that will do it.
