The toilet will flush about 3 times, then stop up again, plunge it many times and will regain flush active about 3 more flushes, etc. Is their something way down the pipe? Should I klobber it out?

You have a broken pipe are stoppage about 20′ down the line have a cable man run his cable and clean it out, if it still happens then have a man run camera down the sewer.

I would say you got something caught in the bowl,take it up and check.Before you take it up run an auger through it.
