I am having a new boat dock installed and will need electric and water installed. The electrician is going to dig a trench to run the necessary electrical lines to the dock. I am told it is possible to run the new water line in the same trench. Is this something the average person can do as a DIY project or should I call the pros? Any info would be appreciated.

First thing is el. buries his pipe about 18″ deep. Water has to be 42″ + to keep from freezing and you have to put drains in the line on the dock to drain to keep from freezing. So if you do not know this are how to do it you better get a Plumber. Make sure you have valve in line to shut it off.

If the application is in a non-freeze area, you can use 160 psi pressure pipe and do it your self. It can be buried in the same trench.
If it is in a freeze zone you can use PEX piping, which can tolerate freezing. It can still go in the same trench, it would help if you blew out the lines in the fall. It would also help if a plumber did this as he would have the crimping tool for PEX tubing. You can buy crimping tools now for around $65.00.

I gave you an answer what is in our code here,If you have a Plumbing code go check it out about in the same ditch. If trouble occurs in the ditch later on and it is dug up with machine and nobody knows the water & El. in same ditch well you know what will happen, but you do what you want to, all my answers are according to code and people who do not work with code does not know it, our code is UPC.

I am going by our code here, You always have to check the codes in your area. Common practice to lay electrical with supply pipe to house in same ditch. Code also states you have to keep the pipe from freezing, ( bury below frost line) If there is no danger of frost why would you install below frost line? I don’t mean to anger anyone here, just giving an opinion. I do work with codes.
