I have a Maytag washer Model A510, 20-25 years old. Hot water is not getting in. Before I replace the valve unit, can I test it with direct current from a wall plug? How do I clean Rust build up on the screens? I have it out of the washer.

If the screens are stainless steel, use CLR to clean them.
Check the wiring schematics on the back cover of the washing machine to make sure that this part you talk of is not working off of reduced voltage.
