After vacation, we returned to find no hot water flow to either our master shower or bathroom sink. Once got it going, flows fine if run from only sink. If open shower valve to full, flows for a moment but then abruptly stops and pipes rattle loudly. Could it be my shut off valve in basement that feeds the hot water to that bathroom?

Sounds like you might have a loose washer in a valve. If you have a valve under sink take it apart and check washer, check the areater on faucet for lime deposits, also take shower valve apart and check for deposits, have someone there with you when you take valve apart turn water on and see if you have a lot same thing on shower.
