I was considering having a tankless takagi tk-2 gas water heater installed and was told that the labor install would cost a considerable amount more than installing a tanked water heater. They both require the same venting and pipe runs – how could this be??? any advice appreciated – and thanks to those who replied on my expansion tank question.

A tankless has to heat all the water used at the time it is used, a tank-type can take time to heat the water, then discharge a large amount later. The tank piping run length can be the same, but the amount of gas burned would be two or more times per firing for a tankless, so the pipe sizes would be larger.

What Harold means is that the vent piping for a tankless water heater must be larger than the usual water heater vents. Also it may be necessary to wire in special electrics to the tankless heater (gas-fired tank heaters don’t require electrics). Also, the tankless heaters are more expensive, but you seem to be referring to the labor costs only…
