why does my water heater a State self cleaning water heater have slow recovery or very little hot water? I have drained it and it still runs out of hot water.It nis a 40 gallon tank. The pilot stays lit but the flame doesn’t go into high. Is it something I can repair myself or should I get a professional plumber

If you have the control knob on the gas control turned to the “ON” position and NOT the Pilot position and, you have the pilot going but not the main burner – then yes I agree it is time you sought the assistance of a trained professional – remember gas is dangerous to the untrained!!!!!
