The state of Texas requires newly installed water heaters to be inspected by the city. The fees are outrageous and you must take a day off of work since the city cannot tell you what time they will be there. Is there a valid reason for this law being passed, or is it just a way for the gov’t to make money? My handyman (who does not report it) says this is what keeps him in business. Any insight into this matter would be appreciated.

They inspect it for gas leaks, gas valves, proper flue connection, proper instalation of flue, make sure it has enough air and check relief valve make sure it is working proper and the right water connections.
