This evening, somebody used the toilet, after this, myself, my wife and my kids were in and out of the bathroom for about half an hour with no problem. We then went out to dinner and when we came home my son noticed that the toilet had overflowed all over the bathroom. Has anyone ever heard of this? If so, what could the problem be?

If you mean that the toilet overflowed from the bowl then it is obvious you have a blocked sewer pipe, if it overflowed from the cystern then you have either a stuck valve seat on the filler valve (ballcock) or a faulty ballcock that needs replacing.
