my p/r valve was leaking hot water , so then i shut off the water supply only and it stopped. which suggest to me that the valve opened due to a pressure problem not a temperature one??? so if the water pressure didn’t change in my town , could it just be a bad valve due to deposit build up? because i never tested or flushed the valve since i bought the tank 5 years ago.

When your heater heats up the water expans and sometimes it is greater and has to releive some where.
