About 2 years ago we had an addition put on the house. The heat is hot water baseboard and it was two zoned. Within the last year the heater has been making very loud banging noises and ticking sounds. At times it sounds like a small explosion!
The contractor advised that it is the pipes contracting and expanding. Of course the loud noises never occur when he’s here. This can’t be normal.
      Can anyone help?

Ticking noises are normal when the pipes are allowed to slide in contact with hangers and beams; releasiing them from fubbing stops the ticking.

Banging is another matter. It might be steam collapsing inside the boiler water from inadequate flow or combustion explosions. These should be onserved to find the source and corrected as well.

But why are the noises only occurring in the new level?

That is most likely where the new pipes were allowed to rub.
