i’m installing a new kitchen sink that has a spray nozzle on the side, but my dishwasher drain goes frst to what looks like an overflow discharge, then gets re-routed to the garbage disposal. it looks like this is just an overflow in case the disposal is plugged up so the water will drain into the sink, would it cause problems if i just connect it right to the disposal?

Thats an air gap fitting for the disposal, you need that acorrding to the code.
