My 40-gallon hot water heater is leaking. What could be causing this? Is this a problem that can be fixed or should I plan on purchasing a new one?

How old is the cylinder? Could it be leaking at a inlet/outlet fitting or at the element? If not it unfortunately sounds like a new one. Call a registered plumber and he will give you the correct advise.
