I had the asbestos insulation removed from my steam heating pipes last year and need to reinsulate the pipes again. The folks at Lowes weren’t a real big help, as they recommended this foil backed 1/8″ foam insulation that doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all. Can anyone recommend a way to insulate these pipes so that I’m not spending a fortune just to heat my basement only? I’ve got 2-1/4″ and 1-3/4″ pipes to cover.

        Thanks

A plumbing supplier will either have in stock or be able to order preformed fiberglass insulation with a covering to glue to secure and seal the split halves on the pipes. Measure the feet and number of elbows of the given sizes and make up an order that they can quote. Don’t forget the glue and brush.
