Can anyone explain the engineering principles on why the gas main from the street is always smaller than the gas main going into the house?

By using high pressures in the distribution lines, smaller diameter piping can be used at a tremedous savings to the gas supplier. Service lines connected to the distribution line are provided with pressure reducing regulators to drop the high pressure gas down to around 1/2 psi before it enters the users piping system inside the home.
