As we have strong sulfur smell with hot water we’re going to remove the rod. Any problems with that? Will it cause heater to age prematurely? Do we need to replace it with a special type of rod? Thanks, Fiona.

Fiona, you must replace the anode (rod). This is an essential part of the cylinder and prevents it from corroding. Depending on the confinment of the cylinder the anode can be difficult to remove & replace. Contact the cylinder manufacturer or a local plumbers merchant with the cylinder model and they are the best to advise what anode is required.
