Installing a water softner

I am looking to install a water softner in my home, there has never been one here. Do I just tap into the main cold water line after the meter and connect the softner there? I am mechanically inclined, but is this too big a project for a home owner?

installing a water softner is basically simple depending on the brand, connect softner to your incomming cold as close as possible to your pressure tank the trick is determing how hard your water is. I recomend having a lab perform this test then follow directions on rate and time of regeneration and back flush times
