My water heater is about 5 years old. Recently it has started making popping sounds at no predictable times. It sounds as though a bubble is forming at the bottom of the tank and rising to the top. The water is not any hotter than usual. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it normal?

Sounds like you haven’t ever drained yout water heater since it was new. A nat. gas water heater has to heat through the sediment collected on the bottom of the tank, which will cause the sounds you are referring to…water boiling between sediment and bottom of tank. Try flushing the tank, but it might be too late.
