i was told that it is useless installing a stop cock for hot water pipes. the heat will wear out the rubber washers. i was adviced to install a gate valve instead.
any comments?would appreciate some advice on this.

I guess that means it is also useless to install hot water faucets on your sinks, since they also have washers, and they are used thousands of times more often than the water heater valve. The reason for using a gate valve, or preferably a ball valve, is that it creates less resistance to the water flow.
