What happens to the garbage disposal when its broken? What are some signs that its broken?

What do you mean broken? If it hums, but doesnt turn, chances are its just jammed up inside, and either the little wrench that comes with the unit, or the back end of a broomstick usually will turn the impeller mechanism enough to free it up. If theres no humming noise, try pressing the reset button (usually located on the bottom of the unit), and see if that restores action. If not, make sure youve got power to it (check breaker/fuse).
