Faucet has push/pull for shower/tub water. It barely pushes in to turn shower on now, used to travel two inches. Do I need to get to apparatus from behind? New washer the problem? Any suggestions welcomed.

If I understand your discription, the diverter button is on the Moen tub/shower valve rather than on the spout. I would first spray a little WD40 up inside the button to see if that helps. If not… The diverter assembly unscrews easily after the round escutcheon is removed (two long scres).
