Smell is always caused by bacteria. Bleach can easily kill bacteria. Add about 1 to 2 cups of bleach to your machine. Without any dishes in your machine, turn it on and go through one cycle. You may want to split up the 2 cups and add a 1/4 cup every few minutes. This would work much better.

Dear Janice,The source of your problem is dual-fold: 1. Residual foods and organics that remain behind after each wash gradually rot and decay (with or without bacteria); and 2. Some odor causing bacteria may be present, which produce additiona odors.A solution to this problem would be to treat your dishwasher in the following manner:Firstly, in order to get rid of the residual organics which have been allowed to accumlated over the last two years, you can use Bacteria Concepts FOREVER GONE. Run the dishwasher without any dishes within, using FOREVER GONE (at least 1 cup) as the soap to be added. After 1 cycle is complete, spray FOREVER GONE (undiluted) onto all internal hard surface areas of the dishwasher. Leave overnight. FOREVER GONE contains safe bacteria that efficiently eat up residual organics and convert them to carbon dioxide and water. The next day, run a common disinfectant (lysol or a 5% Hydrogen peroxide solution) through your dishwasher to disinfect it. This will help to remove odor causing and any disease causing microorganisms present. I do not recommend that bleach be used, as it is highly corrosive and may damage the sealants in the dishwasher. Check with the manufacturer to see if your dishwasher can tolerate bleach, if you wish to use it. Note that even though the bacteria used in Bacteria Concepts formulations are safe and non-pathogenic (non-disease causing), we follow United States health standards requirements in terms of keeping possible food contact surfaces bacteria-free (regardless of how safe the organisms are).Repeat the above treatment if some residual odors remain, or as and when required. We encourage you to contact us to order some product to solve the problem. You will also received detailed instructions on how to use the product to solve any problems you may be facing.Bacteria Concepts manufactures the highest quality bacterial products on the market.
