: Can you tell me how a water softner works? There are many books you could read at your public library that would fully explain water softeners. There are two types of water softeners you could be reffering to. The first type is a simple chemical addition to a tank, well or resevoir. The second is a water softener / ion exchange system.Simply put, both of these softening methods are trying to replace magnesium and calcium hardness with sodium or other neutral ions.Magnesium and Calcium related hardness is the main contributor to scaling in pipes, hot water heaters, radiators etc.. By softening the water we greatly reduce this scaling.Another system that acts as a water softener by removing magnesium and calcium is Reverse Osmosis. Not only are magnesium and calcium almost completely removed but, virtually all contaminants including bacteria and viruses are as well. Reverse Osmosis is quite expensive but if you can afford it you will always have a constant supply of very clean drinking water.
