Iron / Hard water problems!

Recently bought a house, living by myself and not being home much the water use is less than what the previous owners use was. When I returned from a weeks vacation my system was virtually clogged, water was brown and filled with particles (scale). Since then I have had continual problems with water pressure and pump pressure. I have replaced the sand point and the pipes leading from the point to the pump. Do those magnetic or reverse polarity systems that wrap around the pipe actually work? What about build up within the homes plumbing, would these systems help clean out build up? This is what I feel I really need is to get something to clean out the already existing buildup as most of my basement has a ceiling and replacing pipes would be very costly. Thank you for any help.
