Fantastic website. 1. Main water shut off valve for the house is hard to turn, will close off 99% of water when turned hard. The valve and pipe are half buried in stucco, such that replacing the valve is major problem. Any ideas on how to make the valve easier to turn? Would it be possible for me to remove the stem, take it to a plumbing supply place and buy a replacement?2. Toilet water supply valve will not pass water when open, after I replaced the ballcock. I did have to force the plastic hose into place after putting in the ballcock — possibly I damaged the valve by forcing the plastic hose into it? I disconnected this plastic hose from the bottom of the new ballcock, turned on the water supply valve expecting a shower — nothing. Now when I pull the plastic hose only part way out of the supply valve even with this valve shut off, I get sprayed. Any ideas of my replacing the stem here? Sorry for the long email, but have been under the toilet for an ! ! hour, and really appreciate any help. Thanks much. Eric

Eric, Did you get out of the wrong side of bed today? With your luck I suggest you call in the plumber before you drown.

Sounds like maybe the plastic pipe is just pressed too far into the cut-off valve. I dont use plastic, but just look at it closely, youll figure it out. Most shut-off valves do come apart. But it is usually hard to find a replacement stem. A little plumbers grease might make it turn easier, but thats no guarantee that it will then turn the water OFF all the way. Maybe you should just replace the valve and get it over with. Maybe its time to call a plumber like Mossy suggested.
