We live in an area that is supplied by our own well for water. Someone has told me that a typical hot water heater, without modification, will have a drastically shortened life (1-2 year life) if no modification has been made to the hot water heater. Is this true? Ive never heard of this one before.

I have seen well water heaters last for many, many years. But I wouldnt be surprised if some water, somewhere, had something in it that would shorten the life of water heaters. Ask around for more info and see if what you hear makes sense.

Bob, Some well water can have adverse effect on the life of a heater. As Don said ask around the local area for answers or take a sample of water for testing and ask the lab staff.

If your boiler has replaceable magnasium rods, like my Bock. Make sure you replace them, as they are used to control rusting in the boiler. My Bock is over 11 years old and many of my neighbors have already replaced theres but not me! I also have a MicroMet feeder for the house to protect my pipes, well worth the money.
