How do you determine which element may be bad on your electric water heater? I believe the circuit switches between the two elements, meaning one is heating and the other is not, so I cannot figure how to determine if one of the elements is bad (except for the fact I don’t have enough hot water!!)

If you have some hot water the top one is functioning. If you have no hot water, then the reset is tripped, the upper thermostat is bad, or the upper element is bad.
