I’m in the process of adding a new electric hot water heater to my newly purchased home. After purchasing the unit and examining the instructions, I find that it’s a 220 volt unit but it only has two wire hookups and a ground. I understand that it needs a grounded conduit from a branch box. To make this hookup properly, do I just hookup the white wire to the box for grounding purposes or is something else necessary??

If the wire has a bare ground wire in it, use that for the ground and wire nut/cap off the white wire.
this is assuming your wire has a black and red to connect to the heater. If you only have a black and white with the ground then both of them connect to the water heater wires.
