As far a how long it takes it depends on how much root mass you have in the drain line. I would suggest you have the drain cleaned by a professional first then use the copper sulfate to keep the roots under control. A once or twice a year treatment usually does the trick. Copper sulfate will kill the roots, eventually, but then they have to rot and flow away. It is a preventive maintenance item, not an alternative to rodding the sewer if it is already plugged. And if it is partially plugged, the roots that die and flush downstream will usually catch in the ones that are still intact and plug up the sewer.: can one use copper sulfate or rock salt to clear roots?
