Where’s the shower drainpipe??

I have a roughed in shower drain in the basement which is covered by a black pan, under which is a mound of sand. Do I have to dig all the sand out to find the drain pipe?

The shower drain should be just under the sand. Look for a 2″ drainline with a cap on the end. There may already be a p-trap installed onto the pipe.

There is no way to install the shower drain correctly if the pan is already in place. You will have to remove the pan, install the drain fitting, and then fit the pan to the drain fitting.
