mystery basement smell

We have a 50 year old house that we have lived in for one year. The basement has alway had a very odd smell. The basement was waterproofed prior to our moving in with french drain. We have had a plumber and a waterproofing company come in and nobody seems to know what the smell is but they all have suggestions that they THINK may be cuasing it. The smell seem to be coming from an area of our basement that connects to a dug out fruit cellar that was never accessed. Meaning it was dug out when the house was built but there is a cinder block wall where a door might be to that area. We are very frustrated because we dont want to invest alot of money into a POSSIBLE solution for our problem. Do you have any suggestions?
