Id like to replace an old hot water radiator. I take it a need to drain the radiator first. Should I assume that when I disconnect the supply side of the radiator, the only water draining out of the radiator is in fact from the radiatorn and not from the return side of the system. (the system is pressurized). Are ther any system valves that I need to shutoff before draining?

You have a hydronics suystem and a new theory has just occured WATER SEEKS ITS OWN LEVEL. What makes you think the wet return would have no water? I think since you didnt even know the simplest facts about a hot water system YOU had better sell your tools and use the money to hire a professional before you drown yourself or a a min flood your house away. Call a licensed Master Plumber /Steamfitter. Watch how they drain down your entire system and replenish your expansion tank.

A licensed plumber will drain more than your radiator. This is definitely a do-it-yourself job.
