I have recently noticed that when the hot water is used some white stuff comes out in the water. I have been told that this could be a sign of hot water heater problems. I drained the tank and more of this stuff came out. When I filled the tank back up it seemed that there was more of this stuff.

I is a white “chalky” type of material. Does anyone have any idea what it could be and what causes it? Does it pose a health problem?

It sounds like you may have a dip tube problem that has recently been the subject of a class action lawsuit. I believe there is a web site (www.diptubesettlement.com) that can give you more information. There is a listing of water heater manufacturers whose products built in the early 90’s are affected by this problem.
