: Im moving to a cottage with no gas ion the locality, i know nothing about alternative fuels for water/central heating/ cooking, (apart from obviously electricity), any thoughts, experiences, would be appreciated. : Thank you.Oil gives a much hotter flame PLUS if you get a god oil company they can give you a fantastic service contract. The average heating value of #2 oil is between 138,000-140,000 BTU per Gallon. Natural gas heating is between 1,000-1200 BTU Per Cu FT. A properly maintained Oil have very high efficienticies..Make sure who ever installs your boiler (oil) has a Valid oiler installers License Class A good luck

: not knowing what area you are in and the heating demand you will need is one factor that needs consideration. There are many others to consider, yes oil burns hotter but your bottom line is overall cost and equiptment, will LP be needed for range anyway, hot water? Will nat. gas be around in a year or two? There is a big cost factor between systems. Again your bottom line is cost & Maintenance. Also keep in mind the true way to figure the two is with a common factor, A BTU. Figure how much it cost to achieve the same amount of heat with each. Just burning hotter dosnt mean much then.

Another point to consider is that gas is much cleaner than oil. Both for the quality of air we breathe and gas creates less soot build up……. = less maintenance.
