My water softner, after recycling, discharges onto my lawn, killing the grass. Would it hurt my septic system to run this discharge in to my septic tank?

You need to know how much water is discharged during the backwash cycle, and also the type of unit it is may kill bacteria in your septic tank. Check with your local agency that deals with enviromental health.
